The earthquake of 1906

On April 18th, 1906 there was a big earthquake in San Francisco. Most everyone was asleep because it was 5:00am when the earthquake occured. Oddly enough the animals sensed something that the humans didnt. At first it sounded like thunder and then got louder it seemed to swell around the whole city. A police officer remarked that it felt like San Fransisco was riding a wave of earth. The city set fire. The earthquake only lasted a few minutes but the fires burned for 3 days.

Rebuilding of the city

People thought the city would never be rebuilt, but they were mistaken. The people of San Fransisco started puting their city back together almost immediatley. Food, money, and workers came in from all over the country. Randolph Hearst, newspaper owner, asked people who read his newspaper to donate as much money as they could. San Fransisco also had help from Theodore Roosevelt, who sent in army troops and government money.

Cable cars

In 1873 after the worlds first cable car was invented by Andrews S. Hallidie, he formed the Cable Rail way company. The advantage of having the railway system in San Fransisco meant that San Fransisco could sell cable cars to other cities. Even after the cable car was invented the horse and buggy were still mildly popular. San Fransisco noticed that cable cars were wearing down the streets. Even so San Fransisco felt that they still needed the cable car so they kept the idea. <\p> Questions: Q. What year did the big earth hit San Fransisco? A. 1906 Q. what time did the earthquake occur?
