San Francisco Bay geology


The San Francisco Bay is made up of the most complex active geology in the world. The soil is made up of iron and magnesium rich rocks formed in the interior of our earth. Earthquakes have shaped our unique hills, valleys, and the bay. This lanscape is still changingby the Earth's forces, driving the hills and mountains upward. These same forces cause earthquakes.

The San Francisco Bay also has the most wide variety of rocks than most other regions in the United States. There are igneous,sedimentary, and metamorphic.There is also lava rocks in The San Francisco Bay. About ten million years ago, lava from a volcanoflowed into an acient river valley. The San Francisco Bay has a lot of earthquakes.

Finally, the San Francisco Bay is known for many earthquakes in that area. The biggest earthquake in that area was on Tuesday 24 April, at 1:15 p.m., an earthquake of 6.2 occurred near Mt. Hamilton, 16 km (10 miles) east of San Jose, Santa Clara County. This earthquake was felt strongly throughout the San Francisco Bay area, and as far away as Sacramento,86 miles to the north.
