Devils Postpile is a wonderful place. If you haven't been there I can tell you what you would see there. You would see these long pole like things that were formed a long time ago. One day in the valley of Middle Fork in the San Joaquin river lava exploded from a nearby volcano. Then the lava came down into the valley. This caused the valley to fill up with lava. It raised the depth up to about four hundred feet.
Eventually cracks were formed when the lava cooled and shrunk. Then each crack formed a branch. Then these branches deepened and formed long post-like columns. This how Devils Postpile was formed. For more information go to site listed below.
