When you think of Alcatraz, you think,"Oh, that stupid prison on a island." Well you are wrong. You should be thankful that we have it. It was home to many dangerous criminals. If it wasn't there you could've been the next victim of "Machine Gun Kelly!"
The island of Alcatraz is located north of San Fransisco in San Fransisco Bay. The first person to found Alcatraz, in 1775, was Juan Manuel. He named is Alcatraz because it means "Island of the Pelicans." Do you know why? Juan found it when it was splattered with guano! Later, it became a P.O.W. (prisoner of war) site in the wars of the west. Even later it became a prison for dangerous criminals. It was even taken over by Indians once. Shortly after the switching of posessions of the island, all of the Native Americans were kicked off the island. Today it is a monument that can be visited by tourists all over.
One of the most famous gangsters to go to the island was George"Machine Gun" Kelly. Why he was called Machine Gun Kelly was beacuse he purchused a machine gun while he was a gangster. He was born July 18,1885. He had a wealthy family but very poor grades. His best grade was a C+ in Physical Hygiene. Despite his poor grades, he went to a very expensive college. He got a job. At the job he saw this beautiful girl called Memphus ( later he shot her to death). While he was married he was not getting enough money so he became an underground gangster. In 1933 he was posted on a wanted poster. Eventually he was captured by the FBI. He went to court for many things such as Robbing a wealthy man called Charles Urcshal and many murder cases. To this day he is still known as one of the most dangerous people. For further information, see writen records at your local libraries.
